New Delhi, January 9: The Hero Group announced a venture here on Thursday to set up the country’s first bill collection network. Focussed on replacing the existing system where consumers have to pay utility bills such as power and water at separate points, the cash transaction centric system proposes to make retail outlets such as grocery stores and chemists the collection point of all such bills. The venture will take off in March in the Capital, and will spread to other major cities later. Following a whole year of in-house research, Hero’s venture, titled Easy Bill will undertake the training of retail owners and supply them with point of sale (POS) equipment to be imported from a US manufacturer. “Easy Bill marks Hero Group’s entry into a venture which has immense potential in India — over the years our group has acquired tremendous competencies in managing nationwide distribution networks and providing excellent customer service,” said Hero group chairman Brijmohan Lall. The group’s other ventures into service provision include information technology (IT) services, IT-enabled services, training and design services. Mr Lall said the service orientation of the group’s manufacturing business had made these new ventures possible. With Easy Bill, it will be possible to pay taxes, fines, loans, school fees, lottery fees, insurance premia, credit card bills and utility payments. Easy Bill chief executive officer Rahul Munjal said: “The vision of the company is to create a brand which offers consumer convenience in bill payments and reselling of communication services using e-transaction oriented products through a unique national, POS retail network.” Company sources listed the advantages of the system for bill issuers as lower collection costs, improved cash flow and reach and instant availability of transaction data. All Easy Bill outlets will be authorised by concerned bill authorities, and the group revealed that negotiations with five bill issuers are on. Easy Bill proposes to generate revenue by involving a flat fee in the use of its service. This would be less than the average of Rs 12.4 that the group found consumers to be paying when they paid bills using the existing system.
