Hero group plans to provide bill payments service

NEW DELHI: The Brijmohan Lall Munjal-promoted Hero group is now offering to take care of your electricity and telephone bill payments. The Rs 7,500 crore group is setting up a new subsidiary — Easy Bill Pvt Ltd, which will establish a network of neighbourhood bill collection centres where people can deposit any bill payment. The payments would be collected by these retail outlets for a commission of Rs 5 per bill. “We will be charging a flat amount on every bill rather than a percentage commission. In fact, in certain cases we would not be accepting any commission from the consumer,” company officials pointed out. Headed by Rahul Munjal, a third generation member of the Delhi-based Munjal family, Easy Bill has already in talks will all utility service providers in the country, including electricity boards, telehone companies, insurance firms and cellular operators, for inducting them in the exercise. “We will commence services by March this year and cover 35 cities with a 15,000 retailer network by 2005,” Rahul Munjal said. “While we will start with the basic utility services, we will gradually accept all payments through the network, which includes water, gas, cable, taxes, loan payments, magazine subscriptions and even school fees,” he added. This, he said, is an effort to bring the bill collection centres under the organised sector. “The service providers have, as yet, not been able to set up a good network of collection centres and we feel there is a lot of scope in this area. We are inducting the local neighbourhood shop as the retailer and training them to operate these systems.” By 2005, the network would have one retailer in a one km radius. Customers can also buy telecommunication products and avail of other similar services from these points of sale units.
