Easy Bill On Expansion Mode

Financial Express
16th September 2003

Easy Bill, the Hero group’s utility bill paying service, has clocked Rs 5 crore worth of bill transactions in the first three months of operations. With 270 outlets based in retail stores in Delhi and the national capital region (NCR), the company plans to roll out in Mumbai and Punjab by the end of this year.
“Now all states, north and south, want us to introduce our service there,” Easy Bill CEO Rahul Munjal told FE.

Easy Bill has also tied up with cellular providers AirTel and Hutch for bill payment, and a deal with Spice Telecom is to be signed shortly. Private insurers have also approached the company to ink partnerships in bill payment processes.

Significantly for Easy Bill, the cellular operators and TouchTel have begun soliciting the Easy Bill service in flyers attached to bills they regularly send their customers. For instance, Hutch has a flyer with the tag-line ‘All roads lead to the Easy Bill outlet’.

“We have been hearing about several companies planning to enter the bill paying service sector recently, but we feel sure that our base will ensure that we capture a large part of this yet nascent market,” said Easy Bill business head Sandeep Vij.

While some bills like Hutch are free to pay through Easy Bill, the company makes about Rs 5 for every bill transacted through its service. Retailers also make a margin of about Rs 3 for every bill.

Though the company is tight-lipped about what actual revenues it has made so far, Mr Munjal said, “We are generating enough revenue to justify expansion, which is what we are doing now. We should have about 700-800 stores in Delhi and the NCR by the end of this year.” The company targets a break even point of 18 months. Mr Vij said that the test marketing phase of Easy Bill was over and the last three months counted as official and full-blown operations.
